South Korean basketball team has revived their hopes of making it to the London Olympics after beating the Philippines 70-68 in the 2011 FIBA Asia Championship in China.
This year, Asia’s biggest basketball competition serves as a qualifying round for the London 2012 Olympics. The champion will directly qualify for next year’s London Olympics while the runners-up and bronze medalist have to compete in a qualifying tournament in July 2012.
Having lost to the host China in the semifinals, Korea faced the Philippines on Sunday for the bronze medal place.
The manager Hur Jae’s side started the game nervously, scoring just 7 points in the first quarter. They were 13 points behind the Philippines in the third quarter, looking almost certain to blow off their last chance to secure the final playoff berth.
However, the Korean men’s team poured in 34 points in the final quarter to win the game in a dramatic fashion.
Cho Sung-min fired 20 points and Kim Joo-sung scored 14 points to help the team keep their last hope for the 2012 London.
Earlier on Saturday, the team failed to secure an automatic berth at the London Olympics after losing to China 56-43 in the semifinals.
Two NBA players Yi Jianlian and Wang Zhizhi led the host to defeat the Korean side in a low-scoring physical battle, scoring 11 of the team’s final 15 points.
Korea, which beat Japan 86-67 in the quarter finals, was unable to fend off the host’s strong defense, scoring its lowest points in the competition. Korea hit only 1 of 20 three-pointers.
Shooter Moon Tae-jong, who was exemplary until the semifinals, hit only 3 of 17 shots, scoring just six points on the night. Center Ha Seung-jin was also handcuffed by the Chinese centers and had only four points with six rebounds.
Point guard Yang Dong-geun, who scored 17 points, was the only Korean player to score more than 10 points on Saturday night.
Meanwhile, the biggest shock of the championships came earlier when Jordan beat defending champion Iran.
Jordan upset the odds with an 88-84 victory over the 2007 and 2009 champion Iran in the quarterfinals of the Asian championships on Friday. Jordan also rallied in the game to surge past the Philippines 75-61 on Saturday to reach the finals of the Asian Championships.
China and Jordan were to meet in Sunday’s final for the automatic berth in for London 2012.
