Dakgangjeong is a dish of boneless chicken pieces deep-fried and drenched in a sweet sauce.

If you’re familiar with yangnyeom chicken — Korea’s popular fried chicken coated in a sweet and spicy chili sauce — you’ll find dakgangjeong to be a deliciously similar treat. While both dishes involve crispy fried chicken with a flavorful sauce, dakgangjeong offers a twist with its sweeter, syrup-like coating, often made with a sticky glaze and served in smaller, bite-sized pieces.

The name dakgangjeong combines “dak,” meaning chicken, and “gangjeong,” a traditional Korean sweet made by deep-frying rice batter into crispy crackers and dipping them in honey. The technique is the same — deep-frying and coating with a sticky syrup — but with chicken at its heart, it’s a uniquely satisfying experience.

Not a fan of spice? While dakgangjeong is typically coated in a spicy gochujang-based sauce, it also comes in a soy garlic flavor that’s just as addictive.

This dish is a favorite beer snack in Korea, but it’s also loved by young children, who enjoy its boneless, bite-sized pieces and sweet, flavorful coating.
