Giving work orders through Kakao Talk after working hours may continue as the Korean government has failed to open a discussion with Kakao Corp., which operates the country‘s biggest mobile messenger.

Kakao said Monday that while it welcomes a chance to discuss the rights to disconnect from work after designated hours, it does not consider the issue a matter to be discussed between the Ministry of Employment and Labor and a messenger service provider.

“We have no plans to discuss (the matter) with the ministry as of now,” Kakao said.

A ministry official expressed regret over Kakao’s position. The Labor Ministry had reportedly requested Kakao to add a scheduling feature to the popular messenger app so that work directions can be scheduled to be sent in the morning.

Kakao said such change in the app’s functions will hardly offer a solution to the problem and any changes should be initiated by the users.
