During her trip, Barra also plans to visit GM Korea's production plant and to meet local partners such as LG Electronics, the parts supplier for the carmaker's upcoming Chevrolet Bolt.

Barra, who began her 36-year-old GM career at the age of 18 as a co-op student, held a variety of engineering and administrative positions before landing the top position.

She ranked No. 1 in Fortune’s list of the most powerful women last year.
