A local civic group comprised of North Korean defectors sent anti-Pyongyang leaflets across the inter-Korean border on Thursday following North Korea's recent ruling party congress.

The Fighters for Free North Korea said it has scattered some 300,000 leaflets criticizing the first congress of Workers' Party of Korea (WPK) in 36 years, from Gimpo, just west of Seoul.

During the high-profile congress, which concluded its four-day run Monday, North Korea elected its leader Kim Jong-un the chairman of the WPK and proclaimed itself a nuclear state.

Along with the leaflets, the civic group said it also sent 2,000 one-dollar bills, 500 booklets explaining South Korea's development path and another 2,000 USBs and DVDs.

The civic group regularly launches large balloons carrying such anti-Pyongyang information in a campaign to spread dissenting messages in the reclusive country. (Yonhap)
