Top military officials from South Korea and the United States will visit the inter-Korean border village of Panmunjom this week, the allies' Combined Forces Command (CFC) said Monday, in an apparent show of their resolve to deter Pyongyang's potential provocations.

South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) chairman Gen. Lee Sun-jin and new U.S. Forces Korea (USFK) commander Gen. Vincent Brooks will jointly visit Panmunjom on Thursday, the CFC said.

Their visit will come amid growing speculation that Pyongyang may carry out another provocation such as a nuclear test in the midst of international sanctions that were imposed on the communist state in early March. The sanctions, the most stringent yet, were imposed in response to Pyongyang's fourth nuclear test in January and long-range rocket launch a month later.

Gen. Brooks, previously the commander of the U.S. Army Pacific, took office late last month and replaced Gen. Curtis Scaparrotti.

He currently leads the USFK, CFC and United Nations Command (UNC). (Yonhap)
