Kia Motors posted all-time high sales of 56,508 units in the U.S. in April, according to company officials Wednesday.

The automaker attributed the record performance to a 78.9 percent on-year increase in sales of its sport utility vehicle Sportage, and a 35.6 percent sales jump of the Forte sedan.

In the first four months this year, Kia Motors sold 202,829 units, up 4.3 percent over the same period last year.

Unlike Kia’s strong performance, Hyundai Motor sold 62,213 units in the United States in April, down 8.5 percent from a year ago.

The sales decline of Sonata and Elantra models -- Hyundai’s major models -- had an impact, the company said.

Hyundai’s key midsize sedan Sonata saw a 15.1 percent drop with 15,211 units in April compared to the same period last year, while Elantra sales recorded 12,361 units, down 43.5 percent from a year ago.

Hyundai Motor sold 235,543 units between January and April, down 1.9 percent over the same period last year.
