Music festival highlights 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics

Violinist Chung Kyung-wha and jazz vocalist Na Yoon-sun will come together in a performance next month at the 2016 PyeongChang Winter Music Festival in Daegwallyeong, Gangwon Province.

Joining the two international names are a number of well-known musicians in classical music and jazz, reflecting the festival’s goal of presenting diverse music styles.

Na and guitarist Ulf Wakenius will open the festival at Alpensia Concert Hall on Feb. 25. Joining the team on stage will be Chung, who will perform a popular jazz piece as well as a piece that Wakenius composed with Chung in mind. This will be the first time the violin great performs jazz onstage.

The David Orlowsky Trio, composed of clarinetist David Orlowsky, guitarist Jens-Uwe Popp and double bassist Florian Dohrmann, is scheduled to perform at Yongpyong Dragon Valley Hotel’s Grand Ballroom on Feb. 26.

Winners of the 2015 Tchaikovsky Competition will take to the stage at the Alpensia Concert Hall on Feb. 26 and 27, providing the classical element of the festival. Featured musicians include baritone Ariunbaatar Ganbaatar, cellist Andrei lonut Ionita and pianist Lucas Debargue. 26-27. Korea’s own Tchaikovsky Competition winners, violinist Clara Jumi Kang and cellist Kang Seung-min, will also perform.

On Feb. 27, bandoneon performer Carel Kraayenhof and pianist Juan Pablo Dobal will perform at the Yongpyong Dragon Valley Hotel Grand Ballroom. The four-day music festival celebrating the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics will close with a performance by the David Orlowsky Trio ensemble on Feb. 28 also at the same venue.
