A practicing lawyer’s salary in Korea differs by more than 160 percent depending on the workplace, a survey showed earlier this week.

The average salary of a lawyer working for a large law firm was 181.68 million won, the highest among all workplaces, according to the report presented by Seoul National University law professor Lee Jae-hyup at a symposium of the Judicial Policy Research Institute on Monday.

Lawyers at public organizations receive the lowest salary with an average of 69.04 million won. It marked a 163.15 percent difference between lawyers at large law firms and public entities.

The statistics were gathered from 1,020 practicing lawyers who have graduated from law schools, and those who have passed the traditional bar exam in recent years, along with experienced lawyers who have passed the bar exam before 2008.

With the highest pay came the longest working hours, with lawyers at large law firms working an average of 55.53 hours weekly compared to 50.47 hours by lawyers at public organizations.

Most, or 36.7 percent, of law school graduates received between 60 million and 80 million won, while most, or 31 percent of those who recently passed the bar exam received between 80 million and 100 million.
