South Korean air carriers are planning to raise fuel surcharges for international flights in June in tandem with a recent hike in jet oil prices, industry sources said Monday.

Korean Air Lines Co. and Asiana Airlines Inc. -- the country's two top flight operators -- will hike the surcharge to $37 for one-way flights to the United States next month from the current $15, according to the sources.

The extra fees on flights for Europe and Africa will go up to $36 in June from $15, while those to Southeast Asia and the Middle East will be raised to $14 and $30, from the current $6 and $14, respectively, the sources said. The surcharge for flights to Japan and China's Shandong Province will be doubled to $6.

Fuel surcharges for domestic routes, on the other hand, will remain intact at 3,300 won ($3.04) per flight.

The surcharge system, administered by the government, allows air carriers to adjust the additional fees for international and domestic routes every month in line with the movement in the average price of fuel traded via Singapore's spot market in the previous month.

The average jet fuel price hovered at $1.82 per gallon between April 16 and May 15, up from the $1.64 tallied in the March 16-April 15 period.

The latest change in the fuel surcharge comes after the fees hit some of their lowest levels in recent months, with the additional charges for U.S.-bound flights plummeting to $5 in March compared with $154 tallied in January last year. (Yonhap)
