Hanwha Engineering and Construction, one of South Korea’s leading builders, has won a $2.12 billion project to build additional infrastructure in Bismayah, Iraq, the company said Monday.

The multibillion-dollar project is designed to build core facilities for the new Iraqi city 10 kilometers southeast of Baghdad, including 300 schools, hospitals and police stations.

The South Korean builder has already won an order to build some 100,000 homes for the Bismayah New City Project by 2019.

“Hanwha E&C has solidified its footing in Iraq as it has won over $10 billion worth of projects in Bismayah,” said a Hanwha E&C spokesperson.

The builder said it will receive $212 million, or 10 percent of the total, in advance payment for the Iraqi city project by June.

The BNCP is considered the biggest urban development project in the history of Iraq. The new city covers 1,830 hectares of land and is being built to accommodate around 600,000 occupants in a total of 100,000 residential units.

Currently, some 100 South Korean subcontractors are engaged in the Bismayah New City Project and a total of 550,000 workers are stationed at the site.

The additional infrastructure project will add 30,000 jobs, according to the company.

Hanwha E&C, the country’s ninth-largest builder, posted 3.3 trillion won ($3 billion) in sales in 2014.
