South Korea’s major shipping giant CJ Korea Express has begun using a specially designed container for steel coil delivery, boosting shipping efficiency by lessening the damage to steel during transportation and easing the handling process.

One of the unique features of CJ’s new coil container is its design: The bottom of the container, padded with 8 mm of rubber, is shaped like a cradle, so the heavy steel nests safely inside the case instead of rolling around when it is being transferred via ship. This allows CJ to avoid damaging the steel, as was the case with previous coil shipping methods, and to safely stow extra stock to provide more timely deliveries to customers.

The container also opens at the top and sides, speeding up the loading and unloading process.

The new container cuts the total processing time by 30 percent to just 5-10 minutes, compared to the previous 15-30 minutes. This has great potential to lower the company’s shipping and handling costs.

CJ Korea Express currently uses around 350 coil containers, with demand for these containers rising both domestically and internationally, according to the shipping firm.
