LG rolls out smart platforms at CES, taps IoT industry

South Korea's No. 2 tech giant LG Electronics Inc. on Tuesday showcased its new smart platforms at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) taking place in Las Vegas, adding the platforms will help it expand its footprint in Internet-of-Things (IoT) businesses.

At this year's CES, LG showcased the Web OS 2.0, an updated version of the Web OS smart TV platform released last year. The company said the new system will deliver a more convenient user experience by boasting a faster speed.

The company said it seeks to apply the platform to business-to-business projects, seeking to tap the signage industry.

Digital signage refers to large-sized commercial displays including outdoor advertising and hologram panels that use technologies such as liquid crystal displays (LCDs) and light-emitting diodes (LEDs).

LG added its "Wellness Platform" can also be applied to smartphones and various wearable goods to boast its "Bio-signal Analysis Technologies," which enable analysis of the user's heartbeat and sleeping patterns to control air-conditioning devices at home.

"We will roll out a so-called 'openness' strategy to take the lead in the IoT market, seeking unique platforms and bolstering connectivity among devices, while expanding the eco-system of the IoT," said Ahn Seung-kwon, the chief technology officer of LG Electronics.

The IoT is a concept in which all tangible objects are connected to the Internet and can identify themselves to other devices to exchange necessary data for improved efficiency and convenience.

LG also demonstrated its "connectivity solution" in automobiles, showing how users can get information such as weather and traffic data through a navigation system by entering the destination into a wearable device.

The company added it has agreed to join hands with various IoT-related players to tap deeper into the sector, including AllSeen Alliance, oneM2M and iControl Networks Inc.

It also joined forces with U.S.-based high-definition camera maker GoPro Inc. and satellite service provider DirecTV to provide better content for its Web OS 2.0-powered smart TVs. (Yonhap)
