United Energy Co., a Russian power equipment provider, visited LS Industrial Systems to review power solutions including smart grids for Moscow’s urban development.

Andrey Vladimirovich, the chief executive of UNECO, visited LSIS headquarters and plants in Cheongju, North Chungcheong Province, with senior executives on Sept. 15.

UNECO, which was selected as the power infrastructure operator for the New Moscow Project, plans to redevelop the outdated power grids in Moscow and to adopt smart grid technology.

The New Moscow Project aims to transform the surrounding areas of Moscow, and to enlarge the city by 2.4 times, dismantling the capital’s traditional monocentric structure.

UNECO will be in charge of its power sector to push ahead with the modernization of digital substations and network connections using smart grid technology.

During the visit, LSIS showed its 20-kilovolt power technology and its smart grid solutions such as advanced metering infrastructure, system connections with renewable energy and high-voltage direct current.

LSIS said the Russian company’s executives reviewed the possibility of adopting its gas-insulated switchgear, transformer and high- and low-pressure power equipment.

LSIS has set up digital substations and distribution control centers across Iraq, and it also won an order to construct an advanced metering infrastructure, a key smart grid technology, in the country.

The executive team visited the smart grid pilot complex on Jejudo Island and high-voltage direct current centers on Wednesday.

They also went to the Korea Power Exchange in Naju to see the demonstration of the nation’s energy management system, which LSIS also helped develop.

On Thursday, UNECO executives met with LSIS CEO Koo Ja-kyun to discuss the possibility of it joining the New Moscow Project.

“We are planning to adopt smart grid systems. It was a good chance for us to see the smart grid capabilities of Korea and LSIS,” said Akhtyamov Sergey Olegovich, chief director of UNECO.

Kim Jong-han, head of LSIS’ smart grid business division, said, “The New Moscow Project will serve as a role model of city development in Russia down the road. If a smart city with smart grid systems is successfully set up, it can be applied to other power grids across Russia.”
