Turkey mine disaster death toll rises to 274: minister

At least 274 workers were confirmed dead in Turkey's devastating mine explosion, officials said Wednesday, making the accident the country's worst industrial catastrophe.

Energy Minister Taner Yildiz said the raging fire was hampering rescue efforts, adding that "time is not working in our favour."

Turkish riot police clashed on Wednesday with thousands of protesters in Istanbul after a deadly mine explosion, an AFP photographer reported.

Protesters, most of them from left-wing unions, chanted anti-government slogans as they marched along Istanbul's Istiklal street. Police responded with tear gas, water cannon and plastic bullets. The clashes left some people injured, and arrests were also reported. (AFP)
