Galaxy S4 rumored for March release

By Cho Ji-hyun

Samsung Electronics, the world’s top cellphone maker, is expected to organize a major ceremony to unveil its latest Galaxy S4 in the U.S.

The Mobile Unpacked event for the newest Galaxy phone is likely to be held on March 22, according to media and industry sources last week.

SamMobile, an online community dedicated to delivering news involving Samsung, also cited insiders who said that the Korean electronics firm will ship the new Galaxy S4 beginning in April. It also said Samsung was planning to offer the new handset in two colors -- black and white.

In other features, a wireless charging dock station and an Exynos 5 Octa mobile application processor -- unveiled for the first time at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas earlier this month -- was expected for the latest in the Galaxy lineup.

With the rumored 4.99-inch Super AMOLED Full High Definition Resolution display and 2 gigabyte of RAM, the next Galaxy S device is also to have a high-capacity 2600 mAh battery as well as a 13-megapixel camera. It is also expected to be running on the Android 4.2.1 Jelly Bean operating system.

On a related front, Samsung has recently registered two new patents “Eye Scroll” and “Eye Pause” for smartphones and tablets in Europe on Jan. 21. Although the details of the new features were not laid out, industry insiders say it will possibly be similar to Samsung’s “Smart Stay” function, which is an eye-tracking technology that prevents the display from dimming as long as the user’s eyes are looking at the screen.

Other than the rumored specs for the new Galaxy S4, the company reportedly asked its component-manufacturing partners to supply up to 10 million units per order every month.

The move leads industry insiders to believe that Samsung has set its monthly sales target at 10 million units, which far exceeds the level of sales of the previous Galaxy S3. It took about 50 days for the Galaxy S3 to top 10 million units in total sales since its launch in May 2012.

With the release of the Galaxy S3 successor scheduled to take place imminently, companies making components for Samsung are expected to benefit from the launch.

Smaller component manufacturers like RFTech, Hansol Technics and Wisepower, which are involved in completing the wireless charging technology, are noted to be the beneficiary stocks following the launch of the Galaxy S4.
