Dozens of Vietnamese victims of Agent Orange on Thursday embarked on a controversial detoxification treatment plan developed by the Church of Scientology, a Hanoi hospital director said.

US aircraft sprayed chemical defoliants such as Agent Orange over vast swathes of jungle during the Vietnam War in an attempt to flush out Viet Cong communist guerrillas by depriving them of tree cover and food.

The 24 people being treated on a trial basis at Hanoi's 103 Hospital have all been living near the central Danang Airbase, a known dioxin "hotspot", and have all tested positive for elevated levels of the highly-toxic compound.

The patients will receive "the Hubbard method" treatment, which consists largely of saunas, exercise and vitamins, said Hoang Manh An, director of the

103 Hospital where the month-long treatment program is being undertaken.

"The Hubbard method... has not yet been used for the cleansing of dioxin.

We want to confirm the value of this method in cleansing dioxin infection," he told AFP late Thursday, adding he believed it would be effective, especially as there is no other way to treat dioxin exposure.

Hanoi says up to three million Vietnamese people were exposed to dioxin from Agent Orange, and that one million suffer grave health repercussions today, including at least 150,000 children born with birth defects.

The Danang airbase was a key site in the US defoliant program during the Vietnam War -- where much of the 80 million litres (21 million gallons) of Agent Orange used during "Operation Ranch Hand" was mixed, stored and loaded onto planes.

Last month, the US and Vietnam began the first ever joint clean up of the area.

The US Embassy in Hanoi said America was not providing any funding for the program and did not endorse the method.

"We are not aware of any safe, effective detoxification treatment for people with dioxin in body tissues," US Embassy spokesman Christopher Hodges told AFP.

"The best way to reduce health risks associated with dioxin is to prevent human exposure to dioxin, and the best way to do that is to clean up areas where dioxin exists in the environment at potentially hazardous levels."

Founded in 1954 by late US science fiction writer L Ron Hubbard, the Church of Scientology is recognised as a religion in the United States. It claims a worldwide membership of 12 million.

But it has long been controversial, notably in Europe. In France it was convicted of fraud in 2009 and fined hundreds of thousands of euros for fleecing vulnerable followers. The conviction was upheld this year.

While the patients were receiving treatment for free, it was unclear whether the hospital or the Church was funding the treatment. (AFP)

신흥종교 `사이언톨로지' 해독 치료한다

베트남에서 고엽제 피해자 수십 명이 미국의 신흥종교 사이언톨로지가 고안한 해독용 시험치료를 받기로 해 유효성 등에 대한 논란이 일 전망이다.

6일(현지시간) 하노이 103병원 등에 따르면 중부 다낭 공군기지 인근의 고엽제 피해 주민 24명이 무료로 이 병원에서 사이언톨로지교 창시자의 이름을 딴 `허버드 치료'에 들어갔다.

이 치료법은 한 달간의 프로그램으로 주로 사우나, 운동, 비타민 요법 등으로 구성된다고 이 병원의 호앙 만 안 원장은 전했다.

주민들이 거주하던 옛 다낭 공군기지 주변 일대는 고엽제 오염이 가장 심하다고 알려진 곳으로, 이들 모두 체내 다이옥신 수치가 정상치보다 높게 나타났다.

미군은 베트남 전쟁 당시 다낭 공군기지에서 8천만ℓ에 달하는 고엽제를 혼합ㆍ 저장ㆍ적재하는 작업을 벌였다.

그러나 정작 이들 주민이 받기로 한 사이언톨로지식 치료가 실제로 다이옥신 해 독에 사용된 적은 없는 것으로 전해졌다.

호앙 만 안 원장은 "이 방법이 다이옥신 오염 제거에 얼마나 효능이 있는지 확인하려고 한다"며 다른 알려진 치료 방법이 없는 만큼 효과가 있을 것으로 본다고 말했다.

사이언톨로지는 공상과학 소설가인 론 허버드(1911-1986)가 1954년 미국에서 창 시한 종교로, 과학기술을 통한 정신치료나 영혼 윤회 등을 신봉한다.

미국은 이번 치료에 재원을 대지 않았으며 사이언톨로지식 요법을 지지하지도 않는다고 하노이 주재 미국 대사관 측은 밝혔다.

크리스토퍼 호지스 대사관 대변인은 "다이옥신으로 인한 건강 위험을 줄이기 위 한 최선의 방법은 노출을 예방하는 것"이라며 선을 그었다.

베트남 정부는 고엽제로 인해 건강에 중대한 피해를 입은 국민이 100만명에 이르는 것으로 추산하고 있다.

지난달 미국과 베트남 양국은 종전 이래 처음으로 다낭 등 고엽제 살포지역에 대한 공동 정화사업에 본격 착수했다.
