Hollande misses Obama's address

Newly inaugurated French President Francois Hollande missed U.S. President Obama’s speech Monday at the Chicago NATO session on Afghanistan.

French Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said Hollande was late because he was meeting with U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.

Hollande, who has made clear he intends to keep his promise to France that French combat troops will be withdrawn from Afghanistan by the end of 2012, arrived after Obama’s speech on NATO’s plans for Afghanistan.

A media observer said Hollande spoke briefly with German Chancellor Angela Merkel after taking his seat. The two leaders shared a smile, the observer said. (UPI)

프랑수아 올랑드 프랑스 신임 대통령이 21일(현지시간) 시카고에서 열린 북대서양조약기구(나토) 정상회담에 지각하는 해프닝이 벌어졌다.

올랑드는 이날 오전 나토 정상회담이 시작된 지 15분 뒤에 50여명의 세계 정상급 지도자들이 앉아있는 회의장에 슬그머니 들어왔다.

지각 출석으로 올랑드는 아네르스 포그 라스무센 나토 사무총장의 개막 연설과 이번 회의 개최국인 미국의 버락 오바마 대통령 연설을 듣지 못했다.

이날 지각은 올랑드가 브로니스와프 코모로프스키 폴란드 대통령, 반기문 유엔 사무총장과 각각 가진 양자회담 시간이 당초 예정보다 길어진데다가 회의장 주변의 강화된 보안 때문에 일어난 것으로 전해졌다.

프랑스 당국자는 “(올랑드의 지각으로) 외교적 문제가 발생하지는 않았다”면서 “올랑드 대통령이 오바마 대통령의 전체 연설을 이해하고 있으며 오전에 이뤄진 논의에 모두 참석했다”고 말했다.

올랑드는 자신이 선거 공약으로 내걸었던대로 올 연말까지 아프가니스탄에서 프랑스군을 철수시키겠다는 입장을 고수함으로써 나토 정상회의에 이미 논란을 일으켰다. (연합뉴스)
