Four people killed in shipyard explosion

ULSAN, Dec. 30 (Yonhap) -- An explosion occurred at a shipyard in the southeastern industrial city of Ulsan on Friday, killing four workers, police said.

The explosion is believed to have been set off by an oxygen cutting machine and took place at a small-size shipmaker, Sejin Heavy Industries, based in Ulsan, 410 kilometers southeast of Seoul, at 8:50 a.m.

At the time of the accident, the four workers were making components for a large vessel.

울산 공장서 산소절단기 폭발..4명 사망



30일 오전 8시50분께 울산시 울주군 온산읍 원산리 세진중공업에서 대형 선박 블록 제조작업 도중에 산소 절단기가 폭발해 근로자 4명이 숨졌다.

이날 사고는 선박 블록을 만드는 공정을 맡은 사내 협력업체 근로자 4명이 블록안의 밀폐 공간에서 산소 절단기로 작업을 하다가 갑자기 폭발이 발생한 것으로 알려졌다.

사망한 근로자들의 인적사항은 아직 파악되지 않고 있다. 이날 사고로 더 이상의 인명피해는 없는 것으로 나타났다.

경찰과 소방당국은 회사 관계자들을 상대로 정확한 사고경위를 조사 중이다.
