Korean dead in Ghana while escaping “abduction”

A female Korean student died in Ghana while apparently trying to escape from potential abduction, according to Korean government on Monday.

The 21-year-old victim, a student from Hankuk University of Foreign Studies in Seoul, was on a trip with other four classmates for a school project to research the slave trade.

The team had landed on Kotoka International Airport in the capital Accra on Sunday

However, soon they got into a taxi the driver suddenly drove away, leaving the local Korean guide behind.

The two female students already inside sensed that something was wrong and tried to escape the vehicle, according to reports by the Yonhap news agency.

When jumping out of the car one severely injured her head, while the other suffered multiple abrasions of the abdomen, arms and legs

Although medical specialists at the airport provided first aid and tried to transport the severely injured victim for proper treatment, she was declared dead upon arrival at a hospital, an official at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs told Yonhap.

The local police arrested the driver when he returned to the scene, saying he was there to give back their luggage. The Korean Embassy in Ghana requested a “fair and thorough” investigation by the police.

외교부 관계자는 “24일 오후 1시30분(현지시각)께 가나 공항에서 택시를 타고 호텔로 이동하던 여대생 윤모(21)씨가 차량에서 뛰어내리면서 머리를 다쳐 숨졌다”면서 “다른 일행 1명과 택시 뒷좌석에 탔던 윤씨는 택시 기사가 조수석에 타려던 일행 1명을 태우지 않고 출발하자 납치를 의심, 차량에서 뛰어내린 것 같다”고 밝혔다.

이 관계자는 “윤씨 외 다른 일행은 가벼운 부상을 입었다”면서 “택시 기사는 사고 후 사라졌다가 다시 나타나 경찰에 잡혔으며 현지 경찰이 사고 원인 등을 조사 중”이라고 말했다.

이와 관련, 가나 주재 한국대사관 관계자는 연합뉴스와 전화통화에서 “가나를 방문한 대학생들을 마중 나간 한국 남자가 앞좌석에 타려했으나 문이 닫히기 전에 택시가 출발해 그 남자가 문에 부딪혀 튕겨져 나갔다”며 “피해 여대생은 택시가 이동하자 곧 뛰어내렸으나 (땅에) 머리를 심하게 다쳤다”고 당시 상황을 설명했다.

이 관계자는 “피해 여대생이 공항 진료소에서 응급처치를 받은 뒤 컴퓨터단층(CT) 촬영을 할 수 있는 시설이 있는 병원으로 옮겨졌으나 병원에 도착하자마자 현지 의사로부터 이미 사망한 것으로 판정이 났다”고 덧붙였다.

이어 “함께 탄 다른 여대생은 팔꿈치와 무릎 등에 찰과상을 입은 상황”이라며 “택시 문에 부딪혀 튕겨져 나간 한국인 남자는 머리에 혹이 났다”고 말했다.

그는 “아프리카에서 정치정세와 치안이 비교적 안정된 곳인 가나에서 불행한 일이 발생해 안타깝고 유가족을 생각하면 마음이 무겁다”며 “현지 경찰에 공정하고 철저한 수사를 해달라고 강력하게 요청하고 공문도 보낸 상황”이라고 밝혔다.
