A watery supper: Chinese tourists dine at overflowing Han River

Amid seasonal rain in Seoul, some foreign tourist groups signed an agreement to be responsible for their own safety to have supper by the overflowing Han River.

Due to heavy rain, which had lasted several days, the tourists ended up being stranded at the shore side restaurant, eventually being rescued by fire squad.

The squad initially tried to rescue the 88 tourists and 3 guides with a life rope, but the weather conditions got worse and they had to bring in a fire boat. The vessel, with capacity of 30, safely brought everyone back to safety after making three trips.

It then emerged that the tourism company in charge of the group had recklessly kept to their schedule to eat at the restaurant in order to avoid paying penalty for cancelling to the guests.

The owner of the restaurant allegedly tried to dissuade the team from visiting, but the tour guide suggested that he instead sign an agreement that he would not be held responsible for any accidents that might happen.

“It is believed that the guides got carried away in order to avoid financial damages caused by cancellation of the tour, which was reserved a month in advance,” an official from the fire department said.

지난 3일 오후 10시50분께 서울 마포구 합정동에 있는 잠두봉 선착장.

지하1층 지상2층짜리 바지선에 만들어진 이 선착장에서 중국인 관광객 수십명이 난간을 붙잡고 발을 동동 구르며 구조를 애타게 기다리고 있었다.

해가 지기 전 선착장에 들어갔을 때 건넜던 다리는 온데간데 없었고 한강 물은 이미 어른 키만큼 차오른 상태였다.

“한강 물이 차 뭍으로 나갈 수가 없다”는 신고를 받고 출동한 119구조대는 안전로프를 이용해 이들을 끌어내려 했지만 여의치 않자 결국 소방구조정을 동원했다.

20~30명씩 탈 수 있는 구조정이 인근 망원선착장까지 서너 차례 왕복한 끝에 중국인 관광객 88명과 가이드 3명을 무사히 구조했다.

119구조대가 도착할 당시 선착장 2층 중국식 식당에는 이들 중국인 관광객과 가이드, 식당 종업원들만 있었을 뿐 다른 관광객이나 손님은 없었다.

중국의 한 기업체 직원인 이들은 단체로 관광을 왔다가 여행사 가이드를 따라 오후 6시께부터 3시간여 동안 화교가 운영하는 선착장 내 식당에서 식사를 했다.

하지만 이들이 길이 10여ｍ짜리 다리를 건너 한강 위에서 식도락을 즐기기까지는 우여곡절이 있었다.

이날 오후 내린 폭우로 한강 물이 급격히 불어나자 위험하다고 판단해 입장을 막는 식당 주인과 가이드 사이에 승강이가 벌어진 것.

결국 식당 주인은 ‘인명 사고가 나도 책임을 묻지 않는다’는 내용의 각서를 가이드에게 받고 이들을 들여보냈다.

가이드는 패키지 여행상품의 안내를 맡으면서 계약상의 문제가 발생할까봐 걱정해 일정을 강행한 것으로 보인다고 소방당국은 전했다.

마포소방서 관계자는 4일 “한 달 전쯤 예약을 해놓았는데 일정을 취소하면 위약금 등 금전적인 문제가 생길 수 있다고 생각한 가이드가 좀 무리수를 둔 것 같다”고 말했다.
