Seoul National University Hospital’s Parkinson Center said Monday it has developed an original DBS Electrode Location Analysis System to treat Parkinson’s disease and will provide an international service online at http://delas.ondemand3d.com.

The DELAS method involves transplantation of a 1.27 millimeter-thin electrode to the focus of the brain and providing constant electrostimulation to it. The treatment is believed to treat quivering, compulsion disorder, pain, epilepsy and other common symptoms of the disease.

The doctors said the new method will reduce the period of treatment to 1-2 months from the current five to six. It could also help control the amount of medication and stimulation, they said.

“In the past half century, doctors have been able to treat Parkinson’s disease through various drugs and treatments,” hospital director Park Sun-ha said. “We expect DELAS to bring up the quality once again to a new level.”
