Pharmacy worker discovers cash in discarded medication, helps police return savings to widow in Jeju
A woman in Jeju was reunited with 30 million won ($22,000) in cash that her late husband had secretly stashed in a medicine box, thanks to a pharmacy worker who discovered the money and alerted police.
Jeju police said Tuesday that the woman visited a pharmacy in Jeju City on Oct. 26, asking staff to dispose of medication left behind by her husband, who had died after a prolonged illness.
While sorting through the medicine box, a pharmacy worker discovered bundles of cash totaling 30 million won and reported the find to police.
Officers reviewed surveillance footage to identify the woman and found a torn prescription bag bearing her husband's name inside the box.
Using the name as a lead, police tracked down the woman and returned the money the following day.
The woman reportedly had no idea the cash was hidden inside the box.
Police believe her husband had saved the money little by little while working as a taxi driver before falling ill.
