TOEIC RC에서는 단어 뜻만 아는 것으로는 부족하다. 어떤 단어와 함께 쓰이는지, 어떤 전치사가 뒤따르는지, 어떤 문형을 만드는지까지 알아야 실제 문제를 풀 수 있다.
예를 들어 compliance라는 명사를 아는 것보다 compliance with regulations, ensure compliance with safety standards까지 함께 익히는 것이 훨씬 효과적이다.
1. renovated
개조된, 보수된
The renovated lobby will reopen next Monday.
renovate a building / renovate a facility처럼 건물이나 시설과 자주 쓰인다.
2. official opening
공식 개장, 개관
The official opening of the exhibition hall is scheduled for June.
opening은 ‘열다’라는 동작뿐 아니라 ‘개장, 개관’이라는 명사로도 중요하다.
3. finalize
최종 확정하다, 마무리하다
The committee hopes to finalize the contract by Friday.
finalize a budget / contract / schedule / agreement처럼 쓰인다.
4. acquire
인수하다, 취득하다
The company was acquired by a larger competitor.
회사 인수에서는 be acquired by ~ 형태가 자주 등장한다.
5. acquisition
인수, 취득
The acquisition will expand the company's overseas operations.
동사 acquire와 명사 acquisition을 함께 알아두자.
6. identify discrepancies
불일치를 찾아내다
Auditors identified several discrepancies in the records.
discrepancy는 두 수치나 기록이 서로 맞지 않는 ‘불일치’를 뜻한다.
7. promotional
판촉의, 홍보용의
Customers received a promotional discount.
promotional offer / material / campaign처럼 자주 결합한다.
8. take advantage of
~을 이용하다, 활용하다
Members can take advantage of discounted courses.
혜택이나 기회를 적극 이용한다는 뜻이다.
9. durable
내구성이 좋은
The manufacturer uses durable materials.
durable material / equipment / product를 함께 익혀 두자.
10. serve as
~로 근무하다, ~의 역할을 하다
Ms. Ito will serve as acting director.
사람의 직책뿐 아니라 사물의 기능을 설명할 때도 사용할 수 있다.
11. replacement
후임자, 대체품
Management has selected a replacement for the retiring supervisor.
사람과 물건에 모두 쓸 수 있다는 점이 중요하다.
12. consultant
컨설턴트, 자문가
The company hired a consultant to improve its logistics network.
hire a consultant는 대표적인 결합이다.
13. challenge an assumption
가정·통념에 이의를 제기하다
The findings challenge several long-standing assumptions.
연구, 보고서, 기사 지문에서 자주 볼 수 있는 표현이다.
14. nearly twice as ~ as
거의 두 배만큼 ~한
Online sales were nearly twice as high as last year's total.
twice as + 형용사 + as 비교 구문을 익혀 두자.
15. equitable
공정한, 공평한
The policy is intended to create a more equitable workplace.
equitable treatment / system / workplace와 잘 어울린다.
16. highlight
강조하다, 부각하다
The report highlights the benefits of the new system.
emphasize와 바꿔 표현할 수 있다.
17. propose that S + 동사원형
S가 ~할 것을 제안하다
The committee proposed that the policy be reviewed annually.
시험에서는
proposed that the policy be reviewed
형태에 주의해야 한다.
18. regulation
규정, 법규
A new regulation requires restaurants to display allergy information.
introduce / enforce / comply with a regulation 같은 결합도 중요하다.
19. successor
후임자
The board will announce the president's successor next month.
replacement보다 직책을 이어받는다는 의미가 강하다.
20. extend beyond
~을 넘어 연장하다
The promotion has been extended beyond the original deadline.
beyond Friday, beyond the deadline처럼 시간에도 사용할 수 있다.
21. be situated close to
~ 가까이에 위치해 있다
The training center is situated close to the station.
be located near와 비슷한 의미다.
22. submit an invoice
청구서를 제출하다
Vendors must submit all invoices electronically.
submit an application / report / invoice를 함께 익혀 두자.
23. thoroughly
철저히, 면밀히
All equipment must be thoroughly inspected.
단순히 조심스럽다는 의미보다 ‘빠짐없이 철저하게’라는 느낌이 강하다.
24. ensure compliance with
~의 준수를 확실히 하다
The audit was conducted to ensure compliance with safety regulations.
최신 비즈니스 영어에서 매우 중요한 결합이다.
compliance 뒤에는 with가 온다는 점도 기억하자.
25. find A to be B
A가 B라고 여기다
Participants found the software to be easy to use.
TOEIC에서 목적격 보어 구조를 묻기에 좋은 문형이다.
26. notable
주목할 만한, 뛰어난
She has notable experience in international marketing.
particularly notable도 자주 쓰이는 결합이다.
27. meet a tight deadline
촉박한 마감일을 맞추다
The team worked overtime to meet a tight deadline.
영어에서는 일반적으로 meet a deadline이라고 한다.
28. consistently
꾸준히, 일관되게
The branch has consistently exceeded its sales targets.
매출이나 성과가 지속적으로 좋다는 문맥에 자주 쓰인다.
29. impressive record
인상적인 실적
The company has an impressive record of supporting local businesses.
a record of + 동명사 형태도 중요하다.
30. tailored to
~에 맞춘
The course is tailored to the needs of experienced managers.
be tailored to one's needs는 광고와 교육 지문에서 매우 유용하다.
31. refine a résumé
이력서를 다듬다
Career advisers can help applicants refine their résumés.
refine은 완전히 새로 만드는 것이 아니라 기존 것을 더욱 좋게 다듬는다는 뜻이다.
32. personalized support
개인 맞춤형 지원
Members receive personalized support from trained advisers.
personalized service / recommendations도 함께 알아두자.
33. free of charge
무료로
Replacement cards are provided free of charge.
at no cost와 같은 의미로 바꿔 표현할 수 있다.
TOEIC King’s Tip
RC 어휘를 공부할 때는 단어 뜻만 확인하지 말고 세 가지를 함께 보자.
① 어떤 단어와 함께 쓰이는가?
② 어떤 전치사가 뒤에 오는가?
③ 어떤 문형을 만드는가?
compliance만 외우는 것보다 compliance with regulations를 외우는 것이 TOEIC에서는 훨씬 강하다.
