Senior officials from Seoul and Shanghai met Monday to discuss expanding cooperation in business, tourism and the nighttime economy, marking the first high-level meeting between the two city governments since the COVID-19 pandemic.
Jeong Sang-hun, Seoul’s acting vice mayor for administrative affairs, met Shanghai Vice Mayor Lu Shan at Seoul City Hall, the Seoul Metropolitan Government said Tuesday.
During the meeting, Jeong expressed particular interest in Shanghai’s efforts to revitalize commercial districts and encourage economic activity after dark.
Seoul has been pursuing a similar strategy. The city recently unveiled its “24-Hour Vibrant Economic City Seoul” initiative, which calls for expanding nighttime tourism, cultural programs and commercial activities.
“Seoul and Shanghai have built mutual understanding and friendship through exchanges in various fields over many years,” Jeong said.
“We will further expand cooperation in the economy and industry, as well as culture, tourism and youth exchanges, so that businesses and residents of the two cities can meet and communicate more frequently.”
Seoul and Shanghai established a friendship-city relationship in 2014 and have since cooperated in areas including urban management, transportation, arts, tourism and talent development.
