Seoul and the Swiss canton of Basel-Stadt discussed possible collaboration on the 2027 Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism as architects from Seoul and Basel gathered this week to exchange ideas on public space and housing.
Seoul Vice Mayor Kim Sung-bo met with Conradin Cramer, president of the Basel-Stadt Executive Council, on Tuesday to discuss cooperation on the biennale’s sixth edition, the Seoul Metropolitan Government said Wednesday.
The meeting also reviewed progress on an exchange program for architects launched under an agreement signed last year.
As part of the exchange, three architects from Seoul — Jeong Sang-kyong, Baek Han-yeol and Hong Jung-hee — joined Basel architects Magdalena Stadler and Miriam Stierle at a public forum on public space and housing Tuesday at kHaus in Basel. The event was organized by Basel-Stadt and the Swiss Arts Council Pro Helvetia.
“Building on this meeting, we will work to ensure that Seoul and Basel share their experiences and continue working together at the 2027 Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism,” Kim said in a statement.
During his European trip, Kim is also scheduled to visit two art storage facilities that Seoul is using as references for the Seoripul Open Storage Museum in Seocho-gu.
Designed by renowned Swiss architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron, the museum is scheduled to open in 2028.
Schaulager near Basel combines art storage and conservation with research and exhibitions, while Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, gives visitors access to a museum collection held in storage.
