The arrival of artificial intelligence has compressed decades of technological evolution into a handful of years, altering the basic texture of our daily lives. AI is no longer a distant science-fiction trope; it writes, translates, paints, codes, counsels and even mimics human emotion with unsettling fluency. Tasks that once demanded years of work and experience can now be summoned with a few keystrokes.
This moment compels us to confront a fundamental question about technology and society. Marshall McLuhan famously argued that “the medium is the message,” suggesting that new tools do not merely serve human purposes but reshape human thought and social organization. From that vantage point, AI is not merely an instrument of efficiency but an epochal force rewriting labor, education and human interaction.
Technology, however, does not operate in a vacuum. Scholars such as Trevor Pinch and Wiebe Bijker demonstrated how technologies take shape through social values, economic interests and human choices. AI is no exception. It does not dictate the future on its own; its impact depends on the intentions, institutions and ethical frameworks we bring to its development. The real question, then, is not simply how much of our work AI will usurp, but what kind of humans we must become to live alongside it and what principles will guide us there.
Different generations experience this seismic shift from entirely different vantage points. For our children, the most pressing imperative may not be mastering AI tools but learning how to think without them. As children encounter screens earlier and earlier, the danger extends beyond screen time. Raised on instant gratification, superfast search results and predictive text, the slow and uncomfortable labor of struggling, failing and figuring things out alone may begin to atrophy. Why wrestle with a difficult book when an algorithm can produce a polished summary in seconds?
Still more troubling is the transformation of human relationships. Conversing with a machine is frictionless. An algorithm never loses its temper, dismisses your ideas or pushes back. Human relationships, by contrast, are gloriously difficult. Other people possess minds of their own. They disappoint us, challenge us, misunderstand us and force us to reconsider assumptions we take for granted. Enduring that friction is part of what makes us grow. Empathy is not learned by interacting only with agreeable machines; it is learned through the difficulties of human relationships.
For a college graduate, AI is a harsh reality. In the past, entry-level jobs served as training grounds where young people acquired basic competencies by drafting documents, organizing data, preparing presentations and handling clients. Today, algorithms can perform many of these tasks faster and more cheaply, tempting employers to bypass entry-level hiring altogether. When the first rung of the career ladder disappears, the opportunity to climb it shrinks with it.
Paradoxically, the occupations least vulnerable to AI in the near term are often those requiring physical presence, manual dexterity, contextual judgment and human empathy: caregiving, construction, culinary work, plumbing, electrical trades, maintenance and skilled service. Yet Korea has long misclassified these essential occupations, treating white-collar jobs and academic credentials as the exclusive benchmarks of success. Now that AI threatens the office class, government elites can casually advise young people to “learn a trade,” while failing to connect with young people who have a different sense of social prestige and purpose.
Middle age occupies a particularly anxious space. Straddling the analog and digital worlds, middle-aged adults remember a time before the internet, yet many have learned to navigate coding, SQL, CAD and now AI. They are relatively comfortable with change, but adapting to change is different from driving it. With mortgages, family obligations and retirement looming, they cannot simply reinvent themselves overnight.
In a society grappling with housing and income disparities and shifting pension ages, middle age can feel like a trap. These workers have labored diligently and invested heavily in their children’s success, only to discover that a child’s secure future no longer guarantees a parent’s peace of mind.
As debates over extending the legal retirement age stall between keeping experienced workers in the labor force and protecting opportunities for younger workers, middle-aged employees are left wondering whether their decades of hard-earned experience will retain any economic value tomorrow.
For the elderly, the paradox is real. The mind may remain youthful while the body slows, yet the cultural reverence once attached to age in Korea has largely dissolved. In a hyper-digitized society, gray hair is often treated as a liability rather than a badge of wisdom. Struggling with touchscreens, automated kiosks, digital authentication and an endless flood of information, older people can find their lifelong reservoir of practical wisdom casually dismissed simply because they fumble with digital tools.
In the end, every generation is wrestling with a different phase of the same transition, asking the question in different registers. Children are moving from human-centered to AI-mediated environments and asking whether they can still learn to think for themselves. Young adults are colliding with algorithm-driven labor markets and asking whether there will be a place for them in the economy. Middle-aged adults, who may be relatively safe from the immediate threat of AI taking their jobs, are asking whether the experience they spent a lifetime accumulating still has value. Seniors are pushed toward the margins of a culture obsessed with the new, the fast and the technologically fluent, raising the question of whether society still has a place for wisdom.
To age gracefully in the age of AI requires a new way of living. It means letting go of the illusion that security comes from seniority, credentials or knowledge nobody else possesses. And it means accepting that aging is not necessarily a decline in productivity but an evolution in purpose.
I cannot tell you what your purpose should be, and that is precisely the point: It is not something anyone or anything can hand to us. I know mine: to live my fullest life and to help young people whenever I can, with the hope that their happiness will be my legacy.
Besides, I will never ask AI to define that purpose for me. Purpose was never among the things it was built to hold.
