Posco Group’s nonprofit arm, Posco 1% Foundation, is launching a classroom remodeling initiative to improve learning environments for students with special needs.
The project, titled “Classrooms for Growth Together,” targets what the Korean government calls "special education" classes at elementary schools in Pohang, North Gyeongsang Province; Gwangyang, South Jeolla Province; and Seoul, where the group operates major business sites.
Founded in 2013, the foundation has raised 116 billion won ($76.3 million) in donations and continues to expand its social contribution programs.
Under the initiative, classrooms will be renovated to enhance safety and accessibility. Planned upgrades include non-slip flooring, removing door thresholds to improve mobility, and installing shock-absorbing cushioning. Lounge areas will also be redesigned with low-stimulation colors suited for hypersensitive students.
The foundation will also provide customized educational equipment tailored to different disabilities, aiming to boost student participation and ease teachers’ workloads. These include wheelchairs for students with physical disabilities, reading magnifiers for the visually impaired, and augmentative and alternative communication devices for those with developmental disorders.
“This project goes beyond simple renovation. We aim to create an environment where students with special needs can learn and grow with dignity,” a Posco official said.
“In line with the government’s push to strengthen public education, we will continue to support environments where both students and teachers can focus on learning.”
Applications will be accepted through the end of the month via the Posco 1% Foundation website. Schools will be selected through document screening and on-site evaluations, with construction set to begin during the summer break.
