Hyundai Engineering and Construction Co., South Korea’s largest builder, said Friday it was paying “unwavering attention” to safety standards in a $2.6 billion bridge project in Kuwait.

The builder has undergone numerous model tests in building the bridge, in collaboration with researchers at Korean universities.

The company said it was also focusing on developing materials that could withstand the environment in Kuwait, a desert country famous for its very dry and hot climate.

In 2012, the company signed a contract with Kuwait’s Combined Group Contracting to design, build and maintain a bridge in the Gulf state.

Hyundai will receive 80 percent of the total construction fees, or $2.06 billion, making it the largest overseas engineering project run by a Korean company since a 1984 coastal waterway project led by Dongah Construction.

The bridge is being built over Kuwait Bay and connects Shuwaikh port with Subiyah, an area in the northern oil-producing part of the country.
