7일 특허청에 따르면 삼성전자는 삼성 기어2의 후속작인 ‘삼성 기어 솔로’를 특허 출원 했다고 밝혔다.
‘솔로’라는 이름에서 알 수 있듯이 스마트 폰과 연동 없이 스마트 워치를 단독으로 전화를 걸고 받을 수 있는 삼성 기어 2 모델이 될 전망이다.
본지는 지난달 삼성전자가 SK텔레콤과 함께 유심 칩이 내장된 삼성 기어2 제품을 출시할 계획에 있다는 기사를 게재한 바 있다.
업계 관계자들에 따르면 유심칩을 탑재한 기어의 모델명이 실제로 솔로로 채택될지는 지켜봐야 할 것이라고 전했다.
특허 출원 후 내부 회의를 거쳐 최종 승인을 받아야 모델명이 확정되는 삼성 내부 프로세스 때문이다. 이 때문에 특허 출원 이후에 모델명이 바뀌는 경우가 종종 발생한다.
대표적인 경우가 삼성 갤럭시 기어로, 초기 이름은 삼성 워치로 특허 출원을 받았다.

USIM-embedded Samsung Gear Solo to be released
As reported earlier by The Korea Herald, Samsung Electronics and SK Telecom are preparing to release a new standalone variant of the Samsung Gear 2, equipped with a universal subscriber identity module, or USIM, and a new source showed that the smartwatch will likely be christened as “Samsung Gear Solo.”
According to the Korean Intellectual Property Office, the state patent office, the electronics giant has filed a patent with the name for the standalone smartwatch.
As the name Solo indicates, the wearable device will enable users to make and receive calls without syncing it with smartphones.
An SK Telecom source previously said the new model would only be available in Korea for a while, but did not rule out the possibility of a release in other global markets.
A Samsung offcial declined to comment on the USIM-embeded smartwatch.
