박근혜 당선인, 첫 총리직에 정홍원 변호사 임명

박근혜 대통령 당선인은 새 정부의 첫 총리직에 전직 검사이자 새누리당의 공천위원장으로 활약했던 정홍원 변호사를 지명했다고 인수위원회 부위원장 진영 의원이 금요일에 밝혔다.

국가안보실장에는 전 국방장관인 김장수, 그리고 대통령 경호실장에는 박흥렬 전 육군참모총장이 임명되었다.

진영 부위원장은 정홍원 후보자에 대해 “30년간 검찰에 재직하면서 확고한 국가관과 엄격한 공사구분, 원만한 인품으로 법조계의 신망을 받아왔다” 며 “중앙선관위 상임위원으로 재직하면서 선거제도 개혁과 창의 행정을 구현했다”고 인선 배경을 설명했다.

정 후보자는 지난 주에 투기와 아들 병역 문제 등으로 사퇴한 김용준 전 총리 후보자의 뒤를 잇게 되었다.

당선인이 총리 임명동의안을 국회에 제출하면, 국회는 특별 인사 청문 위원회를 구성해서 15일 이내로 청문회를 열도록 규정되어 있다.

정 후보자의 임명에 대해서 각 당은 엇갈린 반응을 보였다.

새누리당의 이상일 대변인은 서면 브리핑을 통해 “정홍원 후보자는 공천 후에는 곧바로 정치권을 떠나는 등 처신을 깔끔하게 한 분” 이라고 평가했다.

그러나 민주당 박기춘 원내대표는 8일 당 비상대책위원회 자리에서 당선인의 구상을 존중한다고 하면서도 “법 절차에 따라 상식과 순리에 맞게 검증과정을 밟겠다”고 말했다.

President-elect Park Geun-hye on Friday named Chung Hong-won, a former prosecutor who worked as the ruling Saenuri Party’s election nomination chief, as the first prime minister of her incoming government.

Park also named former Defense Minister Kim Jang-soo as chief of the presidential national security office and former Army Chief of Staff Park Heung-ryul as head of the security service.

“Chung, during his 30 years in the prosecution, won respect and trust from within the judicial circles for his determined views and amicable character,” said Chin Young, deputy chief of Park’s transition team.

The 69-year-old senior lawyer thus became Park’s second choice for prime minister, following Kim Yong-joon who gave up his nomination last week amid irregularity scandals.

He also held close ties with Park in last year’s April general elections as the party’s nomination committee chairperson.

Once the president-elect submits the motion on Chung’s appointment, the National Assembly is to kick off a special committee and hold a confirmation hearing within 15 days.

Parties showed different responses on Park’s choice.

“Chung showed himself to be selfless and devoted to reforms, when he worked as nomination chief last year,” said the Saenuri Party’s spokesperson Lee Sang-il through a statement.

The main opposition Democratic United Party, however, pledged a thorough examination on the nominee.

“As much as we respect the president-elect’s plan, we shall take all legal procedures (to review Chung’s qualifications),” said the party’s floor leader Park Ki-choon.
