Ssangyong Engineering and Construction recently won the Building and Construction Authority Awards ― one of the industry’s greatest honors ― in three categories for its recent construction of Marina Bay Sands Hotel in Singapore.

The Marina Bay Sands, developed by U.S.-based resort company Las Vegas Sands, is an integrated resort near Marina Bay in Singapore, featuring 2,561 rooms, a 120,000 square-meter convention center and a 74,000 square-meter shopping mall.

Adding to the uniqueness of the resort, which officially opened in 2010, the hotel component is divided into three 55-story towers overlooking Marina Bay. The spaces between them offer views to downtown Singapore.

For the usual design, Ssangyong, the main contractor, adopted a strut-and-tension-cable system to support the walls during construction. The struts were removed after large trusses linking the towers were installed at the 23rd floor.

Through the innovative method, the company could reduce the construction period by 63 days, while saving on materials and workers by 61.5 percent and 43.8 percent, respectively, officials said.

With the technique, Ssangyong topped the two construction categories of the BCA Awards during the award ceremony held on May 24 on the city-state’s Santosa Island.

The company was also honored with the Green and Gracious Builders Awards for the company’s environmentally friendly and safe management of all its construction sites in Singapore.

The BCA Awards is given by the Ministry of National Development of the Singapore government. Established in 1999, the award recognizes the year’s best players in Singapore’s construction industry.

Ssangyong has won the most awards, with 19, including 14 for construction and five for eco-friendly management, among Korean builders in Singapore.
