The main opposition Democratic United Party, rejected the suggestion of the Unified Progressive Party to form an inter-party unity against the prosecution’s forceful investigation.

“Our top priority is to restore order within the party and to regain the people’s trust,” said the DUP’s interim chief Park Jie-won in the party’s primary in Jeju on Sunday.

Park nevertheless expressed concerns over the prosecution’s intervention in political affairs and warned authorities not to abuse the UPP’s member register under any circumstances.

The UPP’s emergency leader council chairman Kang Ki-kab on Saturday staged a protest against the prosecutorial raid over the party headquarters and the seizure of the member register.

“The prosecution’s extortion of the party member register does not just involve the UPP but the entire political circles,” Kang said, pledging to form an inter-party alliance.

Prosecutorial officials seized the UPP’s online vote-managing servers last Tuesday, which resulted in violent physical clashes with the resisting party members.
