Canadians to get hairy for NHL playoffs

With NHL playoffs days away, Canadian hockey fans are being encouraged to get hairy and grow beards to raise funds for heart and stroke research.

For the second year, the National Hockey League Players' Association is teaming with the Heart and Stroke Foundation to raise funds by participating in the players' longstanding tradition of growing beards during the playoffs.

In a release, the two groups said last year's whiskers grown by 2,037 players and fans raised nearly $200,000 for research. Additionally, it helped fund the placement of 29 defibrillators in Canadian hockey arenas, the release said.

For those who can't grow a beard, pledges can be made for numerous NHL players who have committed to the cause, all of whom are listed at the www.beardathon.ca Web site.

The NHLPA also gives prizes for fans who raise the most money from pledges, including signed hockey jerseys and tickets to games.

"Growing a beard is synonymous with playoff hockey," said NHLPA spokesman Mathieu Schneider. "We look forward to seeing some great playoff beards throughout the spring while we aim to top last year's NHLPA Beard-a-thon fundraising total."

북미 아이스하키리그(NHL) 플레이오프가 다가오면서 캐나다 팬들이 선수들과 팬들이 합심해 심장병과 뇌졸증 연구를 위한 기금 모집에 나섰다고 UPI통신이 4일(현지시간) 보도했다.

2,037명의 선수들과 팬들이 참여한 작년의 행사는 거의 20만 달러(한화 2억2,500만원)를 모금했다. 게다가 캐나다 내의 하키 경기장에 심장박동을 정상화시키는 제세동기 29대를 설치하는데 도움을 줬다.

이 행사는 참가자가 해당 사이트 (www.beardathon.ca)에 찾아가 자신이 수염을 기르고 있는 자신의 사진을 올리면 웹사이트를 찾은 이들이 참가자들의 사진을 보고 기부금을 내는 식으로 운영된다.

수염을 기를 수 없는 사람들은 수염을 기르고 있는 다른 참가자나 선수를 지목해 기부금을 냄으로써 참가할 수 있다.

선수 협회는 가장 많이 기부금을 모은 팬에게 사인 유니폼과 경기 입장권 등 선물을 나눠주고 있다.

협회장 마티유 슈나이더는 “수염을 기르는 것과 플레이오프 하키는 밀접한 관련이 있다면서” 플레이오프 기간동안 멋진 수염을 보는 것과 작년 모금액을 뛰어넘기를 기대한다고 밝혔다.

캐나다에서 하키는 가장 인기 있는 스포츠 중 하나로서, 캐나다에 연고한 NHL팀은 몬트리올, 오타와, 토론토, 위니벡, 에드몬튼, 켈거리까지 총 여섯 구단이다.
