Asteroid to make close Earth visit

An asteroid approaching Earth in 2013 will get closer than the orbits of many satellites, highlighting a need to monitor such hazards, European scientists say.

An amateur team discovered the unusual asteroid, dubbed 2012 DA14, Feb. 22 as it flew by Earth at about seven times the distance of the moon, the European Space Agency reported Thursday.

However, on its next flyby, Feb. 15, 2013, it is predicted to pass Earth at less than 15,000 miles, closer than many commercial satellites, the ESA said.

"This is a safe distance, but it is still close enough to make the asteroid visible in normal binoculars," Detlef Koschny of the ESA's Space Situational Awareness office said.

While an impact with Earth has been ruled out as a possibility on the asteroid's next fly-by, astronomers will use its near approach for additional study and to calculate the gravitational effects on it of Earth and the moon.

"We will also be keen to see the asteroid's resulting orbit after the next close approach in order to compute any future risk of impact," Koschny said. (UPI)

내년 초에 지구에 지날 것으로 예정되는 소행성이 인공위성들보다도 더욱 가까운 거리까지 접근한다고 UPI통신이 15일(현지시간) 보도했다.

유럽 우주 기관 (European Space Agency: ESA)가 발표한 바에 따르면 소행성 2012 DA14은 지난 2월 22일, 지구와 달 사이 거리의 7배 정도까지 가깝게 지나갔다고 한다.

그러나 이 소행성이 다음 번에 지구 근처를 지나는 2013년 2월 15일에는 대다수 상업 인공위성들보다도 가까운 거리인 15,000마일 (24,140 킬로미터)까지 접근한다고 한다.

ESA 소속 데틀레프 코스츠니는 일반 망원경으로도 이 소 천체(天體)를 관측할 정도로 가까운 거리긴 하지만 안전하다고 밝혔다. 지구와의 충돌 가능성은 전무한 것으로 예상되고 있다.

천문학자들은 이번 접근을 미래에 있을지도 모르는 충돌 위험 여부를 가늠하기 위해 소행성을 더욱 자세하게 관측할 기회로 활용하고자 한다고 코스츠니는 말했다.
