Korean short track star gets Russian citizenship

South Korea's three-time Olympic short track champion Ahn Hyun-soo, who is currently training in Moscow, has been awarded Russian citizenship, officials here said Wednesday.

In a statement, the Kremlin said President Dmitry Medvedev signed off on a special decree granting the 25-year-old Korean native Russian citizenship. According to Aleksei Kravtsov, president of the Russian Skating Union, Ahn will receive his Russian passport soon after New Year's Day.

The shift will open the door for Ahn to represent Russia at upcoming international events, including the 2014 Winter Olympics in the Russian resort town of Sochi.

Beginning training here in June and applying for a Russian passport in August, Ahn said he was finally ready to get the administrative work out of the way.

Ahn stands to lose his Korean citizenship. Under South Korean law, those who voluntarily apply for a foreign passport must renounce their Korean citizenship. But the skater said he "had no other choice."

"I wanted to compete for Russia and I couldn't do it without Russian citizenship," Ahn told Yonhap News Agency by phone. "And I wasn't allowed to retain dual citizenship. I can get my Korean citizenship back once I return home. For now, I want to stay focused on competing here."

The Olympic champion said he has chosen "Viktor" to be his Russian name. He said it's a common Russian name that also resembles the English word "victory" and added he wanted to become as famous as a late half-Korean rock musician, Viktor Tsoi.

Ahn is among the world's most decorated short trackers. At the 2006 Torino Winter Games, he won three gold medals and one bronze.

He also captured five straight world titles from 2003 to 2007.

In 2008, he suffered a career-threatening knee injury after crashing into a wall during a practice, and underwent four operations in 15 months. He later missed qualifying for the national team for the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics.

Ahn's father, Ki-won, has alleged that Hyun-soo was a victim of factional feud within South Korean short track.

Ahn said he will discuss his future schedule with Kravtsov. In January, the European short track championships will take place in Czech Republic.

"I am in decent shape but I haven't really trained much while going through injury rehabilitation," he said. "I don't want to force the issue. I will keep training and see if I can enter the Czech event."

He said his long-term goal is to represent Russia at the Sochi Winter Olympics and win a medal.

Though a traditional winter sports power, Russia has yet to win an Olympic short track gold medal. South Korea leads the all-time short track medal tally with 19 gold medals and 37 overall. (Yonhap News)

드미트리 메드베데프 러시아 대통령이 한국 출신 쇼트트랙 선수 안현수(26)에게 러시아 국적을 인정하는 대통령령에 서명했 다고 러시아 빙상연맹이 28일(현지시간) 자체 웹사이트에 올린 성명을 통해 밝혔다.

빙상연맹은 성명에서 "메드베데프 대통령이 26일 자로 올림픽 3관왕인 안 선수 의 러시아 국적 취득을 허용하는 대통령령에 서명했다"고 소개했다. 안 선수는 내년 1월에 러시아 여권을 받게된다.

러시아 국적을 취득하면서 안 선수는 이중 국적을 금지하는 국내 법률에 따라 한국 국적은 자동으로 상실하게 됐다.

안 선수는 러시아 국적 취득 소식을 전해듣고 "공식적으로 러시아 국민이 된 것 이 기쁘다. 이 순간을 아주 오래 기다려왔으며 이제 형식적인 문제를 고민하지 않고 운동에 전념할 수 있게 됐다"며 만족스러워 했다고 러시아 빙상연맹 공보실은 전했 다.

안 선수는 옛 소련 시절 러시아에서 명성을 떨친 고려인 록 가수 '빅토르 최'의 이름을 따 러시아 이름을 '빅토르'로 정한 것으로 알려졌다.

안 선수는 빅토르란 이름을 고른 배경에 대해 "발음이 승리를 뜻하는 영어 단어 'Victory'와 비슷하고, 러시아에서 인기가 높고 한국에서도 유명한 고려인 가수 '빅 토르 최'처럼 러시아에서 유명한 사람이 되고 싶었기 때문"이라고 설명했다.

안 선수는 앞으로 러시아 국내에서 수도 모스크바를 대표하는 선수로 활동하는 것은 물론 러시아 대표 선수로 국제대회에도 참가할 수 있게 됐다.

알렉세이 크라프초프 러시아 빙상연맹 회장은 "안 선수가 공식 국제대회에서 러 시아 대표팀의 일원으로 뛸 수 있는 허가를 받는데 필요한 서류들을 국제빙상연맹에 이미 제출했다"고 밝혔다.

그는 "안 선수가 내년 1월 27~29일 체코 도시 믈라다 볼레슬라프에서 열리는 유 럽 챔피언전에 러시아 대표팀 선수로 데뷔전을 치르길 기대한다"고 말했다.

크라프초프 회장은 "안 선수에게 이 대회는 부상 회복과 러시아 국적 취득 과정 과 연관된 오랜 휴식기 뒤에 치르는 첫 경기가 될 것"이라며 "그가 이 대회에서 자 신의 능력을 보여줄 것을 의심하지 않는다"고 강조했다.

안선수는 2006년 토리노 동계올림픽 3관왕, 2003~2007년 세계 선수권대회 5연 패의 눈부신 업적을 쌓아 '쇼트트랙의 황제'로 불리는 영예를 누렸다. 하지만 2006 년 올림픽 이후 한국체대-비(非) 한체대로 갈라진 파벌 논란에 휩싸였다. 2008년엔 심한 무릎 부상으로 2010년 밴쿠버 올림픽 출전권을 따내지 못하는 등의 시련을 겪 었다.

여기에 올해 초 소속팀인 성남시청의 빙상팀이 해체되면서 무적선수로 남게 됐 다. 지난 4월 한국 국가대표 선발전에서도 5위에 그쳐 4위까지 주어지는 국가대표 자격을 얻지 못했다. 안 선수는 이런 위기를 겪은 끝에 6월 러시아로 왔으며 8월 중 순 자신의 싸이월드 미니홈피를 통해 러시아 귀화 의사를 밝혔었다.
