Artist traces journey of lightBy Park Min-young

Choi is showcasing drawings, paintings and installations that ponder the relationship between space, time and light at her first-ever solo show.
The exhibition “Something between US” which opens on Saturday at space HaaM in Seocho-dong, southern Seoul, will showcase about 40 pieces of the artist’s debuting works.
“The overall theme is to explore the reflection of time and space and the journey of light. Light plays a very important role in my works; it lights up potential spaces and gives them color. I intended to express the journey of light into visual images,” Choi told The Korea Herald.
Choi studied painting at Ewha Womans University, where she also obtained a master’s degree. She has participated in many group shows at museums and galleries in several countries, including Ceres Gallery in New York and Atelier 54 in Seoul.
She focused on cube drawings to express the philosophical theme at first but that is no longer the only figure she uses.
“It is not the square form of cubes that is meaningful. Viewers will get to see various geometrical figures as well. I tried to turn my mind flow into various figures, like by blurring the borders and edges when lights meet at a certain point, instead of drawing solid lines and faces.”
The exhibition runs from March 12 to 24 at space HaaM in Seocho-dong, southern Seoul. For more information, call (02) 3475-9126 or visit www.choieunhyea.com.
