David Pepin recognized for pioneering research into ovarian hormone production and its potential role in treating age-related reproductive decline
Harvard Medical School professor David Pepin has received the 13th KY Cha Award in Reproductive Medicine for his research into ovarian aging and hormone production, CHA Medical Center said Wednesday.
The award was presented at the 82nd Scientific Congress of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, held in Baltimore from Saturday to Wednesday.
Established by the ASRM in 2011, the award recognizes groundbreaking research in infertility and reproductive medicine. It is named after Cha Kwang-yul, head of the CHA Global Research Institute at CHA Medical Center, in recognition of his contributions to infertility treatment, stem cell research and regenerative medicine.
Pepin was honored for his study, "Extrafollicular Ovarian Steroidogenesis: Stromal Hormone Production as a Therapeutic Target in Ovarian Aging."
His research examines how ovarian stromal cells, located outside the follicles that contain developing eggs, produce hormones and contribute to ovarian aging. By shifting attention beyond follicles and egg cells, the study identifies stromal hormone production as a potential target for treating age-related declines in ovarian function.
Pepin is an associate professor of surgery at Harvard Medical School and associate director of the Pediatric Surgical Research Laboratories at Massachusetts General Hospital. His work focuses on ovarian biology, female reproductive health and reproductive tract development.
The KY Cha Award is the only ASRM honor named after an Asian individual and has recognized 14 physicians and scientists since its establishment.
