Sookmyung Women’s University held a cultural event Tuesday for international students ahead of Chuseok, Korea’s autumn harvest holiday.

International students posed for commemorative photos dressed in hanbok, traditional Korean attire, and took part in traditional games including ddakji, a paper-flipping game prominently featured in Netflix’s hit series “Squid Game,” and gonggi, a Korean game similar to jacks.

Participants also made traditional crafts, including lanterns, mother-of-pearl inlaid keyrings and kites, and sampled Chuseok treats such as songpyeon, half-moon-shaped rice cakes, which a re traditionally eaten during the holiday, and yakgwa, traditional honey cookies.

A “wish tree,” where students could hang notes bearing their goals and wishes for the new semester, was also set up as part of the event.

The event featured five hands-on programs designed to bring international and Korean students together while giving international students an opportunity to experience Korean holiday traditions.
