Hyundai Rotem said Wednesday it will reorganize its business structure to accelerate growth in robotics, hydrogen and AI, as it integrates next-generation technologies across its defense, rail, aerospace and plant engineering businesses.
The overhaul planned for this month reflects the company’s strategy to embed unmanned systems, autonomous driving, physical artificial intelligence and hydrogen energy into its core operations, while strengthening project management and commercialization capabilities.
As part of the restructuring, Hyundai Rotem established a robot and hydrogen business division, expanding its Robot Sales and Robot Research teams. The former New Growth Propulsion Team and Hydrogen Energy PM Team were renamed the R&H Business Planning Team and R&H PM Team to sharpen strategic focus.
To support its AI-driven transition, the company also renamed the Manned-Unmanned Complex Systems Center as the AX Propulsion Center and the Robotics Team as the AI Robot Team, while integrating the Aerospace Systems Team into the Aerospace Development Center.
In defense, Hyundai Rotem plans to equip tanks, armored vehicles and unmanned platforms such as the HR-Sherpa with AI-based autonomous driving and swarm-control technologies, while continuing development of multi-legged walking robots for future battlefields.
In aerospace, the company is developing Korea’s first 35-ton methane rocket engine, designed for rapid reuse without soot buildup, positioning it as a core technology for reusable launch vehicles.
The railway division is advancing AI-based condition monitoring to predict failures and optimize maintenance, alongside autonomous train operation and intelligent CCTV systems. In plant engineering, Hyundai Rotem aims to commercialize AI-powered smart logistics solutions, including automated guided vehicles for ports.
The reorganization streamlined the company from 37 divisions to 35, and from 186 teams to 176, shifting from function-based units to business-oriented structures to speed decision-making.
“From generative AI to physical AI, technological innovation is reshaping industries,” a company official said. “We are building a faster, more flexible organization to strengthen long-term competitiveness.”
