A 43-year-old supporter of ex-President Yoon Suk Yeol inflicted a flesh wound to himself in Seoul on Sunday, expressing discontent over Friday's Constitutional Court ruling that removed Yoon from the presidency.
The man scratched himself across the abdomen with a knife multiple times at around 9:40 a.m., according to police officials. He sustained damages that required emergency care, but was not taken to a hospital. Police confiscated the weapon.
He told officials that his actions were in protest of the Constitutional Court's 8-0 unanimous ruling on Friday that upheld Yoon's impeachment.
Local authorities had dispatched approximately 14,000 police officers in anticipation of possible violence in the aftermath of the ruling, particularly since the riot at Seoul Western District Court, which issued Yoon's arrest warrant, on Jan. 19 left nearly 100 people injured. But no major incidents occurred following the verdict.
Some supporters of Yoon held protests in Seoul against the ruling on Saturday and again on Sunday, but they were much smaller in scale compared to before the ruling.
