A firefighting helicopter crashed during wildfire containment efforts in Uiseong, North Gyeongsang Province, killing the pilot onboard, authorities confirmed Wednesday.

The crash occurred around 12:54 p.m. as wildfires in the region continued to spread for a fifth consecutive day. According to the Korea Forest Service, the helicopter went down in a mountainous area near Gyoan-ri, Sinpyeong-myeon, while engaged in aerial firefighting operations.

The downed aircraft is believed to be an S-76 model leased by Inje County in Gangwon Province. The pilot, whose identity has not yet been publicly disclosed, was found dead at the crash site.

An eyewitness reported seeing a yellow helicopter fall from the sky, prompting an immediate response from emergency crews. Firefighters on the ground continued working to contain the blaze following the crash.

In response to the accident, the Korea Forest Service announced a suspension of all helicopter operations at wildfire sites nationwide, citing safety concerns as it investigates the cause of the crash and confirms the victim’s identity.

Efforts to control the wildfire in Uiseong are ongoing, with local authorities monitoring the situation amid challenging terrain and dry weather conditions.
