SK Chemicals announced Tuesday that it will set up a comprehensive plastic recycling solution center at its plant in Ulsan.
Under the initiative, the company will add a facility that chemically decomposes waste plastic to its existing plant, which has been producing eco-friendly plastics called copolyester.
The new facility will produce recycled Bis(2-hydroxyethyl) terephthalate, or r-BHET, a material used to manufacture high-quality plastics. Upon completion in 2026, it will produce up to 50 tons of r-BHET a year.
The company also plans to establish a research center within the plant to accelerate the development of eco-friendly plastic technology, aiming to complete a fully circular plastic system in its business portfolio.
"Establishing an integrated research and production system from recycled raw materials to recycled plastics will be a crucial turning point in accelerating innovation in the plastic ecosystem's circular recycling,” said SK Chemicals CEO Ahn Jae-hyun.
“Through close cooperation with companies in the food and beverage, automotive, electronics and fashion industries, we will develop comprehensive resource circulation systems for each industry," Ahn said.
