Korean electric wire and cable maker Taihan Cable & Solution has donated $100,000 worth of electric grid equipment to support the restoration of Los Angeles, severely damaged by recent wildfires.

The company announced Monday that its fireproof cables will be supplied to the Los Angeles Department of Water & Power (LADWP), the largest public electricity utility in the US, with 1.5 million billed customers across the southwestern US.

The wildfires, which broke out on January 7, burned 18,000 homes and buildings, claiming 29 lives, before being fully contained three weeks later.

The disaster caused severe damage to utility infrastructure, with estimated economic losses reaching up to $164 billion. It is reportedly on track to be be the costliest wildfire in US history.

LADWP plans to use Taihan’s donated equipment to rebuild the fire-damaged electric grid.

The fireproof cable offered by Taihan was developed in collaboration with Californian companies, aiming to provide wildfire-resistant solutions for the dry, fire-prone US west coast, according to the company.

Beyond this donation, Taihan plans to continue supporting California’s restoration efforts by supplying electricity cables and working closely with local energy providers.

“We hope to provide meaningful support for local communities affected by wildfire damage,” a Taihan official stated. “As a leading energy grid supplier, we will strengthen cooperation with local communities by providing expertise in restoration and disaster prevention.”
