Samsung Electronics on Thursday unveiled a white paper outlining the tech giant's long-term strategy to enhance its 6G communication technology.
In the white paper, titled “AI-Native & Sustainable Communication,” Samsung stated that it will leverage the latest AI technology in 6G development and projected that 6G standards will be finalized by 2030 following candidate technology development, evaluation and consensus-building processes.
“We are intensifying our 6G research efforts, focusing on AI-enabled communication technologies and sustainable networks,” said Charlie Zhang, senior vice president of the Advanced Communications Research Center at Samsung Research.
“As the telecommunications industry accelerates 6G standardization this year, Samsung will develop technologies to align with market demands.”
According to the white paper, AI will be a key technology for 6G, improving operational efficiency, reducing costs and enhancing overall performance. "AI will also play an important role in differentiating operators’ services and technologies as the trend of softwarization and virtualization continues to strengthen in communication networks," Samsung stated.
Samsung also highlighted that 6G will be designed for sustainability, reducing operational costs by improving energy efficiency. It will be ubiquitous, expanding communication service areas and enhancing connectivity by interconnecting terrestrial and non-terrestrial networks.
A secure and resilient network is another key attribute of 6G, ensuring network security, user privacy, and resilience amid advancements in computing capabilities and AI technologies throughout the 2030s, the company said.
For 6G development, Samsung emphasized that advanced 5G models will serve as the foundation, incorporating AI in advance to support new services and use cases.
The tech giant also highlighted five emerging technologies that will define 6G: immersive extended reality, digital twin, massive communication, ubiquitous connectivity, and fixed wireless access.
