An unidentified man sustained serious injuries on Wednesday after setting himself on fire near the headquarters of the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials in Gwacheon, Gyeonggi Province, police said.

The CIO building is where the impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol was brought for questioning over his Dec. 3 martial law declaration.

According to the authorities, the man, whose identity has not yet been confirmed, set himself on fire in a lot near the CIO building at around 8:05 p.m. He was transported to a hospital and is currently being treated for serious injuries.

The police are working to determine his identity while investigating his motive.

Earlier in the day, supporters of President Yoon had gathered near the investigative body's headquarters to protest their detention of the leader. Yoon, suspended from office following Dec. 14 parliamentary impeachment, is under investigation for potential charges of insurrection and abuse of power.
