Chimaek isn‘t just a single dish; it refers to an entire meal experience.
After a long day, Koreans love to unwind with fried chicken and beer — an affordable yet deeply satisfying combination — whether at home, a fried chicken restaurant, a beer place or even an outdoor park.
These days, word has spread globally about Koreans’ secret method of double-frying to achieve an extra-crispy texture. But in Korea, it’s about more than just crispiness — there’s a vast array of fried chicken seasonings, from spicy sweet to snowy cheese, black pepper, honey garlic and beyond.
Chimaek first gained widespread attention across Asia after 2014 Korean drama “My Love from the Star” showcased it. Since then, it has become a must-try experience for visitors to Korea.
One note about the beer: some say it shouldn‘t just be any beer. It has to be Korean beer, for its light and mild mouthfeel that some say complements fried chicken, whether it’s simply fried or also coated in a spicy, sweet sauce.
