Korean women’s satisfaction with their lives is the 13th highest in the world, according to a recent survey.

The Gallup Organization reported Thursday that 55 percent of Korean women said they were “thriving” in employment, security and health.

The worldwide report surveyed a total of 191,313 people in 147 countries including South Korea last year.

Korean women’s 55 percent satisfaction rating was 13th highest, following New Zealand with 58 percent and Brazil with 56 percent.

Women in the U.S. had the same life satisfaction level as those in Korea. It is much higher than those of neighboring countries like Japan with 28 percent and China with 17 percent.

On the contrary, only 44 percent of Korean men said they were satisfied with their quality of life, putting their country in 27th place.

Korean men’s satisfaction level was much lower than most developed countries, including the U.S. with 57 percent and Sweden with 66 percent, though it exceeded that of Japan with 23 percent and China with 18 percent.

Gallup’s report noted that Korean women’s high satisfaction in life reflects the nation’s strong female employment rate, although their salary is much smaller than that of their male counterparts.

한국 남자, 여자보다 인생 만족도 낮아



한국 여성의 생활만족도가 전세계에서 13번째로 높다는 조사가 나왔다.

12일(현지시간) 미국 여론조사기관 갤럽에 따르면 지난해 한국을 비롯한 147개국에서 19만1천313명을 상대로 취업, 안전, 건강 등에 관한 만족도 조사를 실시한 결과 한국 여성의 55%가 ‘좋다(thriving)’고 응답했다.

이는 덴마크(78%), 캐나다(70%), 호주(68%), 네덜란드(65%), 스웨덴ㆍ이스라엘(64%), 핀란드ㆍ오스트리아(63%), 코스타리카ㆍ아랍에미리트(59%), 뉴질랜드(58%), 브라질(56%) 등에 이어 13번째로 높은 비율이다.

또 미국과는 같았으며, 전체 평균(24%)이나 이웃 일본(28%), 중국(17%), 대만(32%) 등에 비해서는 월등히 높은 것으로 조사됐다.

특히 한국 여성의 만족 비율은 전년도보다 무려 15%포인트나 높아져 상승폭이 3번째로 컸던 것으로 나타났다.

이에 비해 한국 남성 가운데 삶의 질에 대해 ‘좋다’고 응답한 비율은 44%로, 조사대상 국가 가운데 27위에 그쳤다.

한국 남성의 생활만족도는 일본(23%)이나 중국(18%)보다는 높았으나 덴마크(70%), 스웨덴(66%), 미국(57%) 등 주요 선진국에 비해서는 턱없이 낮은 것으로 평가됐다.

이에 따라 한국의 ‘남녀 복지지수 격차’(여성 만족 응답률-남성 만족 응답률)는 11로, 전세계 평균(0)을 훨씬 상회한 것은 물론 카타르(13)와 앙골라(12)에 이어 전세계에서 3번째로 높은 것으로 나타났다.

갤럽은 보고서에서 “한국 여성들이 대체로 삶에 대해 긍정적으로 평가하는 것은 남성과의 큰 월급 격차에도 불구하고 전체적인 취업률이 높기 때문으로 보인다”고 설명했다.
