Secretary general's resignation adds burden to opposition party leadership

The secretary general of the main opposition Democratic United Party quit the post and dropped his bid for next month’s general elections Friday, dealing yet another blow to the party’s leadership beset by deepening feuds over its candidate selection process.
Im Jong-seok has been under pressure to step down amid criticism that he mishandled the party’s candidate nomination process and caused its approval ratings to fall with less than two months before the crucial polls.
His bid for parliament has also been questioned due to a pending bribery case involving him.
“Today, I unload a heavy burden of being the party’s secretary general and a candidate for Seongdong district in Seoul,” Im said at a hastily prepared briefing at the National Assembly. “I’d like to offer words of solace as the party’s secretary general to those
who were let down after failing to be nominated.”
The liberal party has been plagued by conflicts between the party’s leadership and those who were excluded from election nominations. Some senior lawmakers even bolted out of the party to run as independents in their current districts.
His resignation is expected to add further burden to Chairwoman Han Myeong-sook’s leadership while her party is negotiating with the leftist minor Progressive United Party (PUP) to form a broad alliance for the elections that are only a month away.
The two liberal parties are fine-tuning the list of candidates and major election agendas, including campaigns in protest of the free trade agreement with the United States and a controversial naval base project on the southern resort island of Jeju.
Im was appointed to the key post in charge of election nominations by Chairwoman Han after she was elected in a leadership contest in January, despite opposition over his ethical qualifications due to the bribery case.
The former two-term lawmaker was indicted in July 2011 on charges of receiving illegal political funds from a troubled savings bank, and received a suspended prison term from a local court last month. Im appealed to a higher court, denying the bribery allegations.
In the 1990s, Im was sentenced to five years in prison for masterminding a female student activist’s unauthorized visit to North Korea. South Korea’s National Security Law prohibits unauthorized trips to the communist state, a legacy of the 1950-53 Korean War that ended in a truce. (Yonhap News)

임종석, 사무총장ㆍ총선후보 사퇴
“세상 일이 마음 같지 않다”..정치자금법 혐의 결백 주장
민주통합당 임종석 사무총장이 9일 4ㆍ11 총선공천 갈등에 대한 책임을 지고 전격 사퇴했다.
임 사무총장은 이날 국회 정론관에서 기자회견을 열어 “야권연대 성사 이후에 부담을 책임지고 싶었지만 세상 일이 늘 마음같지 않았다”며 “사무총장으로, 서울 성동구(성동을)의 총선후보로서의 무거운 짐을 내려놓는다”고 사퇴를 선언했다.
임 총장은 그러나 “저, 임종석은 제가 책임져야 할 일을 보좌관에게 떠넘기는 그런 사람은 아니다. 그렇게 살아오지는 않았다”며 퇴진의 배경이 된 불법 정치자금 수수 혐의에 대해 결백을 주장했다.
그러면서 그는 “끝까지 한결같은 마음으로 저를 믿어주신 한명숙 대표에게 감사드린다”며 “국민 여러분께 민주당이 좀 부족하더라도 조금씩 힘을 보태주셔서 역사가 순방향으로 흘러가도록 도와주길 부탁드린다”고 덧붙였다.
임 총장은 지난 1월 사무총장 임명 당시 정치자금법 위반 혐의로 1심에서 유죄를 선고받은 데서 비롯한 부적절한 기용이라는 비판을 받았다.
그는 특히 비리 연루자들의 공천이 잇따라 확정된 후 당 지지율이 급락하면서 거센 사퇴 압박을 받았다.
임 총장은 총선을 목전에 둔 당의 부담을 덜기 위해 한 대표에게 수차례 사퇴의사를 밝혔으나 한 대표는 만류했던 것으로 알려졌다.
그의 퇴진에는 이해찬ㆍ문재인 상임고문 등 ‘혁신과통합’ 상임고문단이 전날 긴급회동을 가진 뒤 한 대표에게 비리 연루자들의 총선 불출마를 촉구한 것이 큰 영향을 미친 것으로 보인다.
앞서 문성근 최고위원도 지난 6일 한 대표, 임 총장과 3자 회동한 자리에서 “총체적 난국 상황의 실타래를 풀기위해서는 한 대표의 결단과 임 총장의 용퇴가 불가피하다”고 압박한 것으로 전해졌다.
임 총장은 회견 후 기자들의 질문에 아무런 언급을 하지 않은 채 승용차 편으로국회를 떠났다.
