As South Korea wraps up the Winter Asiad speedskating with 12 medals, “living legend” Lee Seung-hoon has set a new record for the most Winter Asian Games medals by a South Korean athlete. On Tuesday, Lee, along with Chung Jae-won and Park Sang-eon, claimed the silver in the men’s team pursuit at the 2025 Asian Games in Harbin, China. South Koreans are now spending an average of 140,000 won ($96) per month on their pets. According to the “2024 National Consciousness Survey on Animal Welfare” released by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, the cost of raising a pet has risen to an average of 142,000 won per month, a significant increase from 16,000 won the previous year. Annual rice consumption per capita has been steadily declining for 40 years, reaching a new all-time low last year. While the use of rice in processed foods and alcohol has increased, consumption by manufacturers for rice cakes, noodles and snacks has decreased. Statistics Korea’s “2024 Rice Consumption Survey Results” revealed that for the 2023-2024 crop year (Nov. 1, 2023 to Oct. 31, 2024), per capita rice consumption was 55.8 kilograms, a 1.1 percent decrease (0.6 kg) from the previous year.
